Google Insights For Search – Powerful and Free
By Anna Johnson on April 16th, 2009Google Insights For Search is a powerful, free tool that provides invaluable data on search term trends based on location, time period and a range of categories.
You can use Google Insights For Search to compare keywords, locations and time ranges to make comparisons and spot trends between keywords.
For example, let’s say you wanted to compare the trend in searches for the term ‘lawyer’ and ‘attorney’ and confined your search to all sub-regions in the United States.
The graph shows that ‘attorney’ is searched on twice as much as ‘lawyer’ and is particularly popular in the District of Columbia, followed by New York state, Maryland, New Jersey and Florida.
If you have a Google account you’ll see numbers on the graph. These reflect how many searches there are per term, relative to the total number of searches performed on Google over time.
The numbers do not represent absolute search volume numbers because the data is normalized and presented on a scale from 0 to 100 (with each point on the graph divided by the highest point, or 100).
A very handy feature of Google Insights For Search is that you can download the data you generate in the form a CSV file. There are also some other nifty features such as the ability to assess the growth in popularity of a term relative to a particular category.
All in all, Google Insights For Search is an invaluable tool to use as part of your Internet marketing – and in particular, search marketing – arsenal.
