Google is taking further steps to cut costs, shutting down a number of services and laying off 100 staff.

Google plans to shut down such services as Google Video, Jaiku (a Twitter-like micro-blogging service) and Google Catalog Search. It will also cease development on Google Notebook, although that will continue to function.

And while Google will continue to hire at a reduced rate, it plans to lay off 100 staff, who may or may not be re-deployed elsewhere in the company.
