Google Developing Micropayment Platform For Newspapers

By Anna Johnson on September 11th, 2009

A recent submission to the Newspaper Association of America reveals that Google is developing a micropayment platform for both Google and non-Google web properties that promises to facilitate subscription payments across multiple news sites, syndication on third-party sites, and micropayments for discrete content.

Google’s ‘vision of a premium content ecosystem’ also aims to give online newspapers a legitimate option for monetizing their content, albeit one they may treat with suspicion!

To date, the newspaper industry has had an uneasy relationship with Google, based on (among other things) Google aggregating news content on Google News without payment to the newspapers originating such content.
