Google Android Market Share Jumps by 44 Percent

Google Android’s share of the U.S. smartphone operating system market jumped from 9 percent in February 2010 to 13 percent in May 2010 – a 44 percent rise in just one month. According to comScore data, Android usage is fast rising against BlackBerry, Apple and Microsoft, whose market shares all dipped slightly during the period.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) still has the leading smartphone operating system with a 41.7 percent market share, followed by Apple (24.4 percent) and Microsoft (13.2 percent).

Meanwhile, Samsung is the market-leading handset manufacturer, with a 22.4 percent market share.

Here are the top mobile handset makers and smartphone platforms respectively, along with their percentage point changes from February to May 2010:

  • Samsung: 22.4 percent (+1.0 percentage points)
  • LG: 21.5 percent (-0.2)
  • Motorola: 21.2 percent (-1.1)
  • RIM: 8.7 percent (0.5)
  • Nokia: 8.1 percent (-0.6)

Top Smartphone Platforms (Month Avg. in May 2010 and Change From February 2010 to May 2010):

  • RIM (BlackBerry): 41.7 percent (-0.4 percentage points)
  • Apple (iPhone): 24.4 percent (-1.0)
  • Microsoft: 13.2 percent (-1.9)
  • Google (Android): 13.0 percent (+4.0)
  • Palm: 4.8 percent (-0.6)
