Google Android, Apple iPhone ‘Neck and Neck’ in U.S. Smartphone Share

In the three months ended October 2010, 60.7 million Americans owned smartphones – 14 percent more than in the preceding three months.

According to comScore data, the leading mobile smartphone platform during the period was RIM (which powers the BlackBerry device) with a 35.8 percent U.S. smartphone market share. Meanwhile, Google’s Android is breathing down Apple’s iPhone in terms of becoming the second most popular mobile platform.

Over the three months, while the iPhone’s market share edged up by 0.8 percent to reach 24.6 percent overall, Android’s share jumped by 6.5 percent to reach 23.5 percent. At this rate, Android will be the second most popular smartphone platform by the start of 2011.

Rounding out the top five smartphone platforms were Microsoft with 9.7 percent and Palm with 3.9 percent.
