GetAFreelancer Changes To Freelancer.com, Reaches 1 Million Users

By Anna Johnson on October 13th, 2009

In case you didn’t think outsourcing wasn’t big, here’s more evidence: Australian based GetAFreelancer recently announced it had 1 million registered users and businesses from 234 countries and territories.

GetAFreelancer was founded just four years ago in 2004, and now competes with powerhouses in the online freelance/outsource space such as Elance.com and ODesk. According to GetAFreelancer CEO Matt Barrie, over 475,000 jobs have been posted on the website to date, amounting to a transaction value of more than $43 million.

The company is also changing its name to Freelancer.com, having bought the domain name for a 6 figure sum from an individual who, some 15 years ago, ran a magazine called Computer Freelancer. Good domain name and good move on GetAFreelancer’s part.

Are you sure GetAFreelancer was “Australian based”? Because I have used it before and the emails I used to get from them had their address located in Sweden.

Their address from one of emails I received from them:
    Best Regards,
    GetAFreelancer.com Support Team
    Plendo Sweden AB
    Box 784
    53117 Lidköping
    Sweden

Hi Mohan, yes Freelancer.com is owned by an Australian company. Just look at the bottom of the home page: you’ll see that it’s owned by Ignition Networks Pty Limited (ACN 134 845 748). ACN is short for ‘Australian Company Number’.
