Facebook vs. MySpace Users
By Anna Johnson on December 23rd, 2008Netpop’s recent research about social networkers revealed some interesting differences between Facebook and MySpace users. And the difference may NOT be what you think…
Think MySpace is for kids and Facebook for college students and grads? Not exactly.
NetPop’s research shows that while Facebook users tend to be aged 18 to 29 years old, MySpace users span all age groups. And while Facebook users do tend to have college degrees (74 percent who do versus 56 percent who don’t) they are also less likely to be married than MySpace users.
MySpace users are, interestingly, somewhat more active on the Internet than Facebook users, spending 5.5 hours versus 5.1 hours online during the week.
Furthermore, when comparing interests, MySpace users are much more interested in NASCAR, astrology, gardening, home decorating, puzzles, animals, card games, pets and games than Facebook users. Facebook users, meanwhile, are significantly more interested in investing, science and education.
So while the stereotype of the Facebook user as an educated twenty-something may be fairly accurate, the stereotype of the MySpace users as a teen isn’t true at all. MySpace users, in fact, constitute a much broader audience with arguably more general interests.
