Facebook To Beat MySpace

By Anna Johnson on February 13th, 2009

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Brett Brewer, the co-founder of the company that created MySpace, said Facebook would win the global battle against MySpace.

Brett Brewer, who co-founded InterMix Media, which sold MySpace to News Corp in 2005, indicated that Facebook had usurped MySpace as the leading global social network.

Figures from Australia appear to reflect this. Nielsen Online found that in September 2007, MySpace had nearly double the number of users of Facebook, but within a year its membership had declined by 400,000 while Facebook had attracted 2 million new users.

The latest Nielsen figures show that as at December 2008, Facebook had double the members of MySpace, with 4.6 million Australian users compared with 2.3 million for MySpace.

Not that Brewer thinks Facebook will continue to dominate. On the contrary, he believes Facebook will itself be usurped by a competitor which comes along offering better user functionality for mobile phones.
