eMarketer Slashes Ecommerce Forecast

By Anna Johnson on March 10th, 2009

We’ve published a lot of stories quoting research and forecasts by eMarketer. On the whole, when it comes to predicting online sales and ad trends, they’ve tended to be on the optimistic side. Well, in a major about-face, eMarketer now predicts U.S. ecommerce will contract, not grow, in 2009.

Yes, the recession is worse than many expected, and ecommerce is likely to be pulled down along with every other form of commerce. eMarketer expects U.S. online sales to contract by 0.4 percent in 2009, falling to $133 billion.

eMarketer does, however, expect ecommerce to bounce, with growth predicted to be 9.8 percent in 2010.
