Email Marketing: What’s The ONE Tactic That Makes The Biggest Difference?

By Anna Johnson on May 10th, 2010

Want to know what is the most important email marketing tactic for generating the best response? Well, a recent survey by email service provider Silverpop reveals that WHEN you send your emails makes the biggest difference to your results (email opens, click-throughs, conversions, etc).

When Silverpop asked which email marketing tactics work best, half of the 1,805 business to consumer (B2C) and business to business (B2B) email marketers surveyed said “identifying the best time to send emails.”

These email marketers represented a broad spectrum of email marketers, with 62 percent having email lists of under 50,000 subscribers, 14 percent having lists between 50,000 and 500,000 subscribers, and 24 percent having lists of more than half-a-million subscribers.

Regardless of list size, most said sending emails at the right time – the time when recipients were most prone to have the time and inclination to read and respond – was the top tactic they implemented in 2009.

Other tactics these email marketers regarded as highly effective in eliciting a positive response were: using customer surveys; incorporating social media into their marketing mix; and sending triggered emails.

All well and good, but the problem for a lot of Internet marketers is timing emails for a global audience. In this case, my biggest tip is to identify where most of your subscribers come from and test different days and times for these people.
