Ecommerce Plummets in 2008

We’ve published lots of articles about trends in ecommerce sales. In general they’ve indicated a drop in the growth rate or a drop in sales last year. Well, here’s some new data which paints the ugliest picture we’ve seen so far: that ecommerce sales shrank by 3 percent in 2008.

According to comScore data published by the Silicon Alley Insider, ecommerce was
ecommerce was growing at by 19 percent this time last year, but, as the chart below shows, ecommerce sales rose somewhat and then slid dramatically throughout 2008.

Overall, retail ecommerce grew by 6 percent for 2008 overall, but the trend doesn’t augur well for 2009.

    Yes GROWTH in ecommerce may be down, however, ecommerce and the Internet offer cost effective solutions for businesses new and old and as the Internet continues to grow, ecommerce will as well.

    I don’t think you’ll get much argument from anyone here. Sales may be down, but the long term prospects remain positive.
