Don’t Spam Digg… Or You Could Be ‘Auto Buried’

By Anna Johnson on February 27th, 2009

In a recent blog post, Brent Csutoras suggests that the rumored ‘auto-bury’ feature on popular news bookmark service Digg really exists.

An email exchange between Digg and a Digg user called Nitmeh3 reveals that Digg, apparently by its own admission, was ‘forced to bury [Nitmeh3's] submissions’ and ‘would not to be able to feature [Nitmeh3] on the homepage anymore and prevent [him] from digging any upcoming stories though [he] can Digg Popular stories.’

These quotes are from the emails Digg allegedly sent Nitmeh3, which he has reproduced on his blog.

As Brent Csutoras says, it’s impossible to know whether the emails are exactly how Digg wrote them. Brent received an email from Jen Burton at Digg indicating that none of the email correspondence between Digg and Nitmeh3 indicates the existence of an auto bury list.

Whether or not Digg has an auto-bury feature or is merely enforcing its terms of service, what is clear is that Digg is coming down on users it believes are spamming the site.

Given the propensity of (thankfully) a small group of Internet marketers to use all kinds of tricks to gain more exposure on social media sites and elsewhere, this should serve as more evidence that such sites won’t just sit back and take it.

Stop spamming or you may be ‘auto-buried’!
