Digg Makes External Links ‘No Follow’

By Anna Johnson on September 22nd, 2009

Recently Digg announced that, in an effort to dissuade people from posting spammy content or ‘link spam’, it would add the ‘no follow’ tag to unverified external links.

Explaining the change, Digg’s John Quinn said that the ‘no follow’ tag – which prevents links from passing Google PageRank to the associated destination web pages – would apply to all links, except those to quality content i.e. webpages Digg can ‘vouch for’.

The change applies to all external links from comments, user profiles and story pages below a certain threshold of popularity.
