Craft Booming During Recession
By Anna Johnson on December 24th, 2008Good news for Internet marketers in a craft niche. As the recession deepens, craft sales are booming.
Craft stores, from giant chains such as Michaels Stores to small scrapbook suppliers, are reporting higher sales this holiday season than they did in 2007. At the same time, online marketplaces for handmade goods, such as Etsy, are experiencing record listings and transactions.
As reported by The New York Times, sales made by Scrap – a craft supply store in Portland, Oregon – were 33 percent higher in November 2008 than in November, 2007.
Sarah Dyer, Scrap’s manager, attributes the increase in sales to people wanting to save money by making, rather than buying, more things.
