Coming Soon to YouTube: DIY Video Rental

By Anna Johnson on May 9th, 2010

Google owned YouTube is planning to let video makers upload their videos and then rent them out, according to YouTube’s head of product management, Hunter Walk.

Hunter Walk told MediaPost that video makers will soon be able to rent out streaming versions of their videos via YouTube, as another avenue for them to monetize their videos on the video site.

Right now, YouTube lets video makers monetize their videos by joining its YouTube Partner Program.

As a YouTube partner, you can share ad revenue with YouTube by, for example, allowing YouTube InVideo ads to be overlaid on your videos, have banner ads run beside your videos, and participate in co-marketing and branded entertainment opportunities with brand advertisers.

To become a YouTube Partner, YouTube requires you to create your own original videos suitable for online streaming and be able to use and monetize your video content. You must also regularly upload videos that are viewed by thousands of YouTube users, or publish popular or commercially successful videos in other ways, such as selling DVDs online.
