Beware The Twitter Worms

By Anna Johnson on May 28th, 2009

If you start seeing your Twitter followers posting messages such as ‘OMG I just got over 1000 followers today from TwitterCut’… do NOT click on the link or give TwitterCut your Twitter username and password. It’s a worm.

The TwitterCut worm (also known as ‘TweetCut’ and probably other names as the people behind the worm create new accounts as Twitter bans the old ones) is ingenious… in the evil sense. It plays on a typical Twitter user’s desire to attract more followers. When you go to twittercut.com and give the site your Twitter credentials it sends out the message above to all your followers. And that’s ALL it does.

It’s probably prudent to be on the look-out for anything looking vaguely suspicious on Twitter. The TwitterCut worm is certainly not the first, and it won’t be the last.
