Australians Embrace Social Networks

By Anna Johnson on August 24th, 2009

We Australians are a social lot. And we’re pretty web savvy too. So it doesn’t shock me to learn that, according to comScore, more 70 percent of Internet users in Australia visited a social networking site in June 2009, up 29 percent from the previous year.

All up, nearly 9 million Australians visited a social networking site in June, with Facebook the number one choice. Over 6 million Australians visited Facebook that month, a massive 95 percent jump from the previous year.

MySpace was the second most popular social network among Australians with 3.5 million visitors (5 percent higher than June 2008), followed by Windows Live Profile with nearly 2 million visitors.

Australians have also embraced Twitter in the last year. June 2009 saw 800,000 Australians converge on Twitter, up from just 13,000 visitors the year before.

I think the whole world is starting to embrace social networks more. It is also very interesting to see what is new in the social media area. You know, what can they come up with next?
