Apple, Facebook Top MyBrandz List of World’s 200 Top Brands
By Anna Johnson on April 29th, 2010Apple, followed by Facebook, top MyBrandz’s rankings of the world’s 200 top brands. Other Internet/technology brands in the top 50 include Google (#5), Twitter (#10), Microsoft (#27), eBay (#18), Linux (#25), Yahoo (#27), BlackBerry (#31), Wired (#39), Amazon (#45) and Verizon (#50).
MyBrandz bases its rankings on its ‘MyBrandz Brands Map’ which maps and sorts companies by popularity and affinity. This, in turn, is based on MyBrandz’s proprietary algorithm, which considers more than 28 distinct qualitative and quantitative parameters, including buzz, brand sentiment, number of Twitter followers, Facebook fans, site traffic and passion for the brand on MyBrandz.com.
According to MyBrandz, Facebook’s jump in brand rank is due to such factors as increased site traffic and positive sentiment in online conversations. What’s more, the social network is on track to surpass Apple.
MyBrandz’s top 50 brands are as follows:
- Apple
- Disney
- NBA

Looking over MyBrandz’s list of the top 50 brands, one wonders how to really interpret the rankings. What does it mean, for example, that Amazon comes in at #47 – lower than the Linux operating system (#25)? Or that Microsoft (#13) trails Twitter (#10)?
Is this more of a popularity contest based on the preferences of a type of consumer e.g. a heavy social media consuming Internet user… or is it a leading indicator of some kind?
