Amazon To Sell 500,000 to 1 million Kindles in 2009
By Anna Johnson on March 4th, 2009Wall Street analysts predict Amazon will sell 500,000 to 1 million Kindle ebook reading devices this year.
While Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney estimates that Amazon will sell 1 million units, JPMorgan analyst Imran Khan believes the number will be closer to half that number.
If Khan is right, Kindle sales will amount to about $63 million in revenue this year. Apparently that will constitute less than 1 percent of Amazon’s predicted $21.9 billion in total revenues.
In terms of ebook sales, Khan says that if Amazon has about 1 million subscribers in total who buy one $8 ebook per month, that’s another – you guessed it – $8 million in sales.
As you can see, neither Kindle nor ebook sales will represent much in terms of Amazon’s total revenue. But if the analysts are wrong, and, as suggested by the Silicon Alley Insider, the Kindle takes off like the iPod has, the figures will be much more impressive.
