83 Percent of Online Shoppers Happy To Share Product Information

By Anna Johnson on September 16th, 2009

According to Ripple6, two-thirds of consumers spend at least an hour per week on social network sites (almost half spend 3+ hours on social sites) and 83 percent of these are very or somewhat interested in sharing information about their purchases with people they know.

Ripple6 surveyed 1,000 frequent online shoppers for its ‘Social Commerce: Conversations Among Consumers’ study and discovered that 41 percent of frequent Internet buyers were inclined to join and actively participate in online communities that shared information about their favorite products.

Furthermore, 74 percent of those surveyed said that pre-purchase opinions from others influenced their buying decisions, and 73 percent agreed that ‘people like me’ are the most trusted sources when making a shopping purchase.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ripple6 also found that product recommendations from friends were almost twice as valuable as product recommendations from merchants (46 percent versus 24 percent) in terms of their influence over purchase decisions.
