8 out of 10 U.S. Internet Users Buy Online
By Anna Johnson on March 4th, 201184 percent of U.S. Internet users bought something online in Q4 2010, up from 78 percent the year before.
comScore’s Q4 2010 U.S. retail e-commerce sales data shows that online retail spending reached a record $43.4 billion in the last quarter of 2010, up 11 percent versus a year ago. This growth rate represents the fifth consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth, and the second quarter of double-digit growth in the past year.
The top-performing online product categories were Computer Software (excluding PC Games), Consumer Electronics, Books & Magazines (excluding digital downloads), Computers/Peripherals/PDAs, and Toys & Hobbies.
Each of the aforementioned categories grew by at least 15 percent in Q4 2010 versus Q4 2009.

Very impressive numbers indeed. There was a time when purchasing anything online was a risky idea to many consumers and many were fearful of using a credit card online but it seems to be the norm now; especially during Christmas time when people want to avoid the crowds at the mall.
