4 Tips For Effective Link Building

By Anna Johnson on March 19th, 2009

Writing in The Search Engine Standard, Rebecca Appleton observes that a ‘hit and run’ approach to link building does not set you or your website up for long-term success, as far as search engine optimization (SEO) goes.

Instead, she offers four tips for an effective link building strategy.

Here’s a short summary of Rebecca’s tips:

  1. Find out who links to your competition. Relevant sites that link to your competition might be prime candidates to link to you.
  2. Devise a well-thought out approach to getting others to link to your site. In some cases, this may simply be a matter of contributing articles or blog posts. In others it may require a personal approach by email and/or telephone. One thing I would urge you to AVOID is a generic link request email. We get these all the time, and they go right into the trash!
  3. Look at the top 10 results for your targeted search phrases in the major search engines. These may be potential link partners for you.
  4. Find out what other sites your audience frequents. Such sites may also provide a rich source of potential link partners.
