157 Million U.S. Internet Users Watch Online Video
By Anna Johnson on August 24th, 2009Online video just continues to become more and more popular. In June 2009 comScore found that over 157 million U.S. Internet users watched online video, the largest audience recorded for a single month.
According to comScore, the growth in online video consumption was spurred by the major news stories of Michael Jackson’s death and the Iranian elections, which generated sizeable interest at major media properties such as Viacom Digital (includes MTV), Microsoft Sites (includes MSNBC) and Turner Network (includes CNN).
Nonetheless, Google continued to dominate online video, accounting for 7.6 billion videos viewed, with YouTube.com comprising more than 99 percent of all videos viewed at Google.
Viacom Digital ranked second with 774 million videos (4.0 percent of the online video market), followed by Microsoft sites with 696 million (3.6 percent) and Blinkx with 623 million videos viewed (3.2 percent).
In terms of viewers, Google attracted an all-time high of over 112 million unique viewers during June, followed by Microsoft sites with 73 million viewers (9.5 videos per viewer) and Fox Interactive Media (of which MySpace forms part) with 59 million viewers (10.1 videos per viewer).
