1 in 5 Mobile Phone Owners Engage in Mobile Commerce
By Anna Johnson on June 1st, 2010A new survey shows that approximately one in five U.S. adult mobile phone owners have used their cell phone for mobile commerce (m-commerce) in the past month.
The April 2010 research by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) and its research partner, Luth Research, also found that mobile users are increasingly using their mobile phones to purchase physical goods, as well as applications and content for the mobile phone itself.
The survey of 1,000+ U.S. adult mobile phone owners found that while 17 percent of respondents used their mobile phone to purchase applications, ringtones and other content, 6 percent used their phone to receive coupons or discounts, and 6 percent used their mobile phone to purchase physical goods or non-mobile content or services.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, smartphone owners were the most likely to engage in mobile commerce, defined by the MMA as “the one- or two-way exchange of value facilitated by a mobile consumer electronic device (e.g. mobile handset), which is enabled by wireless technologies and communication networks.”
More than half of iPhone owners and 34 percent of BlackBerry owners had purchased content for their smartphone in the previous month.
